Chair of Trustees
Director of the Chamwell Trading Company
Governor of The Milestone School
Marie worked as a paediatrician in Gloucestershire from 1980 to 2015. She has always been interested in optimising the outcome for infants who are at high risk of neurodevelopmental problems, such as premature infants, and those with syndromes such as cerebral palsy and genetic conditions. She is a great believer in the benefit of early intervention with support and therapies to help children achieve their maximum potential. She developed a special interest in community paediatrics and neurodisability.
To that end, Marie established the Nigel Hunter Nursery at Gloucestershire Royal Hospital, as a therapeutic nursery to provide specialist support for infants with disabilities and their families. She also chaired the charity that provided funds to employ the therapists and nursery staff, until it was merged with the Pied Piper Appeal charity in 2014 which has provided support for sick and disabled children in Gloucestershire for the last 25 years. Marie continues as a trustee of the Pied Piper Appeal.
Marie was formerly a trustee of the Forest of Dean Children’s Opportunity Centre and Chair of the Milestone School Summer Holiday Activity Scheme charity. She has been a governor of The Milestone School for 15 years and is proud to have known many of the pupils since they were in incubators in the Special Care Baby Unit at Gloucester Hospital. Now that the School has become an Academy, Marie remains a member of the Local Administrative Board for The Milestone School.
Marie is a passionate believer in enabling all children to access sport and physical recreation, no matter what their level of disability. She has already introduced two weekend events – a multi-ability sports club that includes wheelchair racing and throwing events, as well as a RaceRunning club that allows disabled pupils to take part alongside their non-disabled peers. This has now been extended to include a weekly RaceRunning session for The Milestone School pupils, which takes place at the University of Gloucestershire Indoor Arena
Marie was awarded The Pride of Cotswolds Award for Charity Fundraiser of the Year 2019 and has twice been nominated for the South West Woman of the Year award in 2018 and 2019
