Gloucestershire Business Awards Charity of the Year 2017
We are delighted that the Chamwell Centre Charity is Charity of the Year for the Gloucestershire Business Awards 2017.
Dee & Griffin Solicitors is the first company to make the Chamwell Centre Charity its Charity of the Year. Here the company describes its corporate social responsibility programme.
““Dee & Griffin Solicitors are very proud of Gloucestershire. With the majority of our staff and clients living and working in the county we are committed to improving society and the local community. To achieve these goals, we have implemented a Corporate Social Responsibility programme.
What this means in practice is that we allow each of our staff one day a year, on work time, a day out of the office to work with our charity partners. The charity benefits from first class legal and secretarial skills and our employees reap the rewards of paying back into the community.
We are proud to work with the Chamwell Centre as our Charity of the Year. We believe this centre of excellence, built on the site of The Milestone School, will have a tremendous impact on the lives of disabled children and adults across Gloucestershire.”
We have also enjoyed implementing and sustaining the award-winning Mixed Ability Rugby program which encourages people to play rugby regardless of mental or physical disability, or the perception of not being good enough.
August 2018 – Dee & Griffin shortlisted for ‘Sponsor of the Year’ by Longlevens RFC at the Crabbies national Rugby Awards for their support of the Mixed Ability Rugby project.
September 2018 – Dee and Griffin win the Ageas Award at The Local Business Charity Awards following their nomination by Longlevens RFC for their support of the Mixed Ability Rugby project.
September 2018 – Elliot Fortey of Longlevens Rugby Club wins Volunteer of the Year at the Mitsubishi Motors Volunteer of the Year Awards.
October 2018 – Dee & Griffin are shortlisted for the Corporate Social Responsibility Award at the Gloucestershire Business Awards for their work implementing and sustaining Mixed Ability Rugby in Gloucestershire
GillHarrisJames Consultancy has made the Chamwell Centre its Charity of the Year. Its team is undertaking a number of challenge events for the centre and they are also providing us with great advice in terms of planning, research and website support.
Longlevens Rugby Club is for amateurs whose unique mission is participation, and the 2017/18 season has been cause for great excitement because in partnership with The Chamwell Centre they have launched the first Mixed Ability Rugby team in Gloucestershire.
Mixed Ability Rugby encourages social inclusion by removing barriers to participation for people who feel unable to join mainstream clubs due to physical or mental health issues, size, shape, age, disability, inactivity or the perception of ‘not being good enough’. It is all inclusive.
Over the course of this season the successful coaching of both Senior and Junior Mixed Ability Rugby teams has resulted in 40 adults members, and 30 special needs children training on a Thursday.
As the Mixed Ability Team is so new it represents an amazing opportunity to develop a coaching pedagogy within developing their playing, coaching, refereeing, organisational and first aid skills. The participants have enjoyed significant personal development.
The project has helped bring together partnerships between local community groups that including Longlevens Rugby Club, The Chamwell Centre, The Milestone School (one of the biggest special needs schools in the country) Active Gloucestershire and the Wooden Spoon rugby charity for disabled children.
Despite being a global engineering company, Renishaw is a strong supporter of local community organisations and charities through its employee-led Charities Committee, which has existed for over 35 years. We were very impressed with the vision and aims for the Chamwell Centre and it was an easy decision for the Committee to support the project.

The charities that we choose to work with are focussed on either children, vulnerable people, health issues, food and sustainability or related to an active lifestyle.” ChrisCreed, CEO, Creed Foodservice
Creed have worked with the Chamwell Centre Charity since January 2018, to help raise money for their state-of-the-art centre in Gloucester. As a local charity, members of the Creed team have had the opportunity to gain a greater understanding of the Chamwell Centre and learn how the money raised will help support their cause. The level of passion and enjoyment the staff express demonstrates how valuable this experience has been to both Creed and the Chamwell Centre Charity. The development within their facilities and therapies make a massive difference to the children, adults, carers and families within the local community.
